The brief from Backyard Politics, an NGO focused on women's well-being, was to create a compelling editorial illustration for an article about the invisible struggles women face. The goal was to visually represent the idea that while society enjoys the fruits of women's labor, their personal grief, stress, and suffering often remain hidden from view.
I developed a strong central metaphor: a woman’s body forming a fertile island, representing her as the foundation that nourishes her family and community. Above the water, a man harvests fruit, symbolizing the visible benefits she provides. Below the surface, she is curled up, her true emotional state submerged and unseen. This visual duality was designed to create a thought-provoking image that captures the article's core message instantly.
My role was to translate this complex social issue into a single narrative image. The process included:
Conceptual Development: Brainstorming and sketching the core metaphor.
Editorial Illustration: Creating the final artwork with a focus on mood and storytelling.
Client Collaboration: Working with Backyard Politics to ensure the visual aligned perfectly with their message.
The final illustration became the lead visual for the article on the Backyard Politics website, helping to draw readers into an important conversation about women's mental health. This project was a powerful exercise in visual storytelling. It taught me how to distill a complex, abstract idea into a clear and emotionally resonant image, reinforcing my passion for creating illustrations that deepen the meaning of a text.
