For an assignment in my Children's Illustration class with Jay Dart, the task was to create a two-page, non-fiction book spread about an animal of our choice, aimed at elementary school children. The challenge was to research a subject deeply and then translate factual information into engaging illustrations and a clean, readable layout.
I chose the Pika, a charming and speedy rodent that lives in rocky terrains. My process began with in-depth research into their unique behaviors—from how they gather flowers for the winter to their life among the rocks. My goal was to capture the Pika's lively character through expressive illustrations while clearly communicating key facts about its habitat, diet, and unique "hay-making" habits.
This project required a blend of research, artistry, and technical design skills. My responsibilities included:
Animal Research & Content Curation
Character Design & Scientific Illustration
Layout Design for a Two-Page Spread
Typesetting & Print Preparation using Adobe InDesign
Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Indesign
Outcome & What I Learned
The result is "Pika: Life in the Rocks," a project I'm incredibly proud of, which received wonderful praise in class. This assignment was a fantastic learning experience in creating non-fiction content for children. It taught me the complete workflow from research to producing a print-ready file. I gained significant confidence in my layout skills and my ability to make educational content fun and visually appealing for a young audience.
