Color System Design
For my Color, Design, and Type class at Seneca, the assignment was to create a custom map for a location of our choice. The challenge was to merge accurate information with strong visual storytelling, creating a piece that was not only functional as a guide but also engaging and beautiful for a specific target audience.
I chose High Park in Toronto, a destination beloved by local families. My entire approach was tailored to this audience. Instead of a technical or purely geographic map, I aimed to create a whimsical, illustrative journey. My goal was to spark a sense of adventure for children and provide clear, friendly information for parents, highlighting family-oriented activities like picnics, the zoo, and nature trails with a warm and inviting visual style.
This project was a comprehensive exercise in unifying different design elements into a single, cohesive piece. My responsibilities included:
Research & Content Curation (Pinpointing key family-friendly landmarks)
Illustrative Map Design (Drawing the map and all visual elements)
Iconography & Custom Illustration (Creating icons for activities like wildlife viewing)
Layout & Typography (Designing a clear visual hierarchy for easy navigation)
The final piece is my effort to create a user-friendly and charming guide to High Park for families. This project was a valuable opportunity to put design theory into practice, specifically the challenge of balancing creative illustration with the functional demands of a map. It was a great exercise in developing a cohesive design system—thinking through how color, type, and illustration can work together to create an experience that is both helpful and, I hope, a little bit joyful.
