While auditing an Editorial class at Seneca Polytechnic, I was given the freedom to choose my own target audience. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to deepen my specialization in children's media—a field I am incredibly passionate about. Although it wasn't for a grade, I wanted to challenge myself to create a complete and high-quality portfolio piece.
My goal was to design "BUDDY," an engaging magazine concept for children aged 6-11. I aimed to create more than just illustrations, focusing on interactive content that was both fun and educational. For this first volume, the theme was "Choosing Your First Pet," designed to guide kids through this exciting decision.
I managed the entire creative process for this mini-magazine, from the big picture down to the small details. My work included:
Concept & Theme Development (Centered on "My First Pet")
Character Design (Creating the main "buddy" character)
Interactive Page Design (Including quizzes and matching games)
Cover-to-Cover Illustration
Procreate, Adobe InDesign
Outcome & What I Learned
The result is a vibrant concept for "BUDDY" magazine, complete with a cover, back page, and interactive inner pages. This project was a valuable exercise in adapting my illustration style for an editorial context. It taught me how to structure content specifically for kids to keep them engaged. The process, including incorporating feedback from my professor, Salini Perera, reinforced my passion for creating thoughtful media for young audiences and resulted in a portfolio piece I'm truly proud of.
