The Brief
I was commissioned to create a series of editorial illustrations for a narrative based on a true story of betrayal and trauma. The article explores the experience of a woman sexually harassed by a close friend on their graduation day—a moment that should have celebrated their shared future. The challenge was to balance the personal pain of the victim with the complex socioeconomic subtext of the perpetrator’s background.
My Approach
The core concept centers on the metaphor of a cracked porcelain doll trapped within a glass dome. This symbolizes the victim's perceived "safety" and the irreparable damage to her world. To highlight the theme of social inequality, I used visual barriers like car windows and street-side imagery. These elements serve as a lens to view the disparity between the two lives, illustrating how systemic hardship and personal trauma can collide in devastating ways.
What I Did
Metaphorical Branding: Developed the "cracked doll" motif to represent the internal scars that remain hidden from the outside world.
Visual Juxtaposition: Contrast soft, innocent art styles with harsh, heavy themes to create a "silent" but powerful emotional impact.
Narrative Flow: Designed the compositions to lead the viewer from a state of isolated grief to a broader understanding of the social divide.
Outcome & What I Learned
The final artworks provided a poignant visual anchor for the story, helping to translate abstract feelings of betrayal into tangible imagery. This project deepened my ability to handle highly sensitive narratives with empathy. It taught me that editorial illustration is at its strongest when it doesn't just show what happened, but captures the emotional weight of the truth.
