After becoming a mother, I experienced a profound sense of isolation. While my friends were advancing in their careers, my world became centered on baby duties, and I felt my own identity and dreams slipping away. This project was born from that challenge: to visually articulate the often-unspoken mental health struggles of motherhood—the feeling of being in a cage, cut off from the world you once knew.
My approach was to channel my personal feelings of loneliness and identity loss into a universally relatable visual narrative. As a key project for my Illustration Diploma at Seneca, my goal was not just to create beautiful art, but to foster empathy and start a conversation. I wanted to create a piece that would resonate deeply with other mothers and help others understand the emotional complexity of this life-changing role.
This project was an exercise in turning raw emotion into a structured, impactful series of illustrations. My role encompassed:
Conceptual Development
Visual Storytelling
Expressive Illustration
Procreate
Outcome & What I Learned
The result is "A Cage Called ‘Motherhood’," a deeply personal series that speaks to a shared experience. I learned how to transform my own vulnerability into a source of strength and connection through art. The project was selected to be shown at the Seneca Gradeshow at Gallery2104, where it received the "Faculty Choice Award" for its strong message. This recognition was incredibly validating and affirmed the power of illustration to communicate profound human emotions.
