Overview

Overview

The first-ever Muay Thai Festival in Toronto took place on August 20th, 2023, at Evergreen Brickworks. The festival featured six exciting Muay Thai fights with top fighters from Ontario and a special appearance by renowned Thai boxer, Senchai. Alongside the fights, the event showcased live demonstrations, workshops, traditional Thai performances, and a variety of delicious Thai food from top local restaurants.

What I Did

What I Did

  • Planned site structure to surface schedules, fighter bios, venue info, and food vendors with minimal clicks.

  • Designed the visual direction to balance a modern event feel with Thai cultural motifs.

  • Built a responsive WordPress site using reusable blocks for fast updates by organizers.

  • Wrote/organized key content (program timeline, FAQs, policies, directions, parking).

  • Implemented basic SEO, performance tuning, and analytics.

  • Produced all event collateral: posters, entrance signage, wayfinding, and match-announcement flyers.

  • Coordinated last-minute content changes and quality assurance leading up to fight day.

The Challenge

The Challenge

As a first-time festival, there was no legacy brand system and the schedule evolved rapidly. The site needed to communicate a multi-track program (fights, demos, performances, food) clearly, work flawlessly on mobile, and support frequent content updates under tight timelines—while presenting an authentic Thai aesthetic that resonated with a broad Toronto audience.

Design Approach

Design Approach

I established a flexible design system inspired by Thai textures and patterns, paired with clean typography for legibility. Content was organized into scannable sections—Schedule, Fighters, Food Vendors, Getting There, and FAQs—with clear CTAs. A mobile-first layout prioritized quick wayfinding, sticky navigation, and card-based summaries. On the backend, reusable WordPress blocks and templates let organizers add or revise bios, timings, and vendor details without breaking layout. The print system mirrored the web style for consistent brand recognition across posters, entrance signs, and bout announcements.

What I Learned

What I Learned

  • How to translate cultural themes into a modern, accessible event brand across web and print.

  • The value of componentized WordPress blocks for same-day schedule and roster changes.

  • Wayfinding and readability principles for event signage (type scales, contrast, hierarchy).

  • Practical coordination under volunteer constraints—clear checklists beat ad-hoc fixes.

This was my first volunteer project in Canada and a rewarding way to support a unique cultural event while sharpening rapid event-site workflows.
